Three key concepts:
- 95%, on average, of the organization’s people do not understand – or are even aware of – the company strategy. If you are seeing your organization’s execution wander all over the place, you should not be surprised. But neither should you rest until it is addressed.
- If you want a powerful culture of strategic execution, make sure that you first forge clarity, then drive empowerment, then inspire engagement, then generate accountability. You must go in this order if you want to truly shape your culture.
- How we maximize our people directly impacts how we maximize our decisions. This is the key to strategic execution. Without committing to this principle, we are handing our strategies and all of our assets over to be wasted.
BONUS – Leader guide: Use the following questions for (a) self-reflection as a leader and/or (b) a great discussion with your team.
1) Listen to the full episode before this discussion.
2) Do you agree or disagree that strategic execution is fundamentally about creating an environment of great decision-making? Why?
3) Define “great decision-making” in 10 words or less without using any form of the word “decision.” Share your answers.
4) What elements are most important to how we make great decisions here?
5) Is there anything that we do (or do not do) that gets in the way of making great decisions? What, if anything should we do about that?
6) Using Tim’s model as a guide (start with clarity, then empowerment, then engagement, etc.), where should we be putting our efforts right now?
7) Option: Take time right now to define exactly what that looks like (the outcome(s), metrics, and requirements).
