Three key concepts:
- Only hire people who will fit your culture. Culture is more important than proficiency because it drives how you execute.
- Hire for a growth mindset. When people have a growth mindset and value relationships over individual accomplishment, the capacity of the whole team is elevated. Execution then becomes an extension of that growth capacity.
- Honesty and transparency are absolutely critical for execution. People need to be confident that they can share even bad news so that the right decision can be made. No one should be afraid of being honest and open.
BONUS – Leader guide: Use the following questions for (a) self-reflection as a leader and/or (b) a great discussion with your team.
1) Listen to the full episode before this discussion.
2) Daniel talked about how a growth mindset is essential to a strong culture. In your own words, what is a growth mindset?
3) The concept of a “growth mindset” was popularized through the work of Carol Dweck. In this article, she summarizes that people with a growth mindset “worry less about looking smart and put more energy into learning.” What do you think are the most common attributes of people with a growth mindset?
4) What are the most common obstacles to having a growth mindset? How many of these obstacles are self-generated?
5) Consider the culture of our organization. Do we ever hinder honesty and transparency in the name of “being positive”? What does this tell you?
6) How can we use a growth mindset to improve our strategic execution? What can you do specifically to make an impact?
7) Option: Take time right now to define exactly what that looks like (the outcome(s), metrics, and requirements).
